- Foliage: The plant features long, lance-shaped leaves with wavy margins. The upper surface is light green with a pattern of dark green blotches resembling a rattlesnake’s markings, while the underside is a rich, solid purple.
- Growth: It is an evergreen perennial that forms clumps and typically grows to a height of 60–75 cm (24–30 in) indoors.
- Movement: As a member of the Marantaceae (prayer plant) family, its leaves are known to fold up at night.
Care and Growing Conditions
nsignis is considered a moderate to high-maintenance plant that requires specific conditions to thrive.
- Light: The plant thrives in bright, indirect light or partial shade, mimicking its natural habitat on the rainforest floor. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves and should be avoided.
- Watering: The soil should be kept evenly moist during the growing season (spring and summer), but never waterlogged. Water when the top inch or two of soil feels dry to the touch. It is sensitive to the chemicals in standard tap water, so use filtered, distilled, or rainwater to avoid browning leaf tips.
- Humidity: High humidity is crucial for this tropical plant. You can maintain adequate moisture by misting the leaves regularly, using a humidifier, or placing the pot on a pebble tray with water.
- Temperature: The ideal temperature range is between 15°C to 23°C (59°F to 73°F). Avoid placing it near draughts, heaters, or vents, as sudden temperature fluctuations can harm the plant.
- Soil: Use a light, well-draining houseplant compost rich in organic matter to ensure good aeration and moisture retention.
- Feeding: Apply a balanced, half-strength liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the spring and summer growing season. Do not feed in winter.
