A “Calathea mix” is a collection of various Calathea species known for their diverse and vibrant foliage patterns and their fascinating “prayer plant” movement, where leaves fold up at night. These plants are popular as indoor, pet-friendly, air-purifying houseplants.

• Light: They thrive in bright, indirect light and tolerate partial shade. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it can scorch the leaves and cause colors to fade.
• Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Allow the top inch of soil to dry slightly between waterings. It’s best to use filtered, distilled, or rainwater, as they can be sensitive to the chemicals in tap water, which can cause brown leaf edges.
• Humidity: Calatheas need high humidity (ideally 50-70%). Regularly misting the leaves, using a pebble tray with water, or placing a humidifier nearby can help. Bathrooms and kitchens are often ideal spots.
• Temperature: Maintain a consistent warm temperature, generally between 18°C to 23°C (65°F to 80°F). Avoid cold drafts or sudden temperature fluctuations.
• Soil: Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive potting mix rich in organic matter. A mix of peat moss (or coco coir), perlite, and orchid bark works well.
