The smallest living horsetail, this unusual plant is actually an aquatic fern. It is an evergreen perennial, with slender, black-barred stems that remain on the plant all year round. It has much smaller and more delicate foliage than the other horsetails, and is also clump-forming and non invasive – it requires no real maintenance other than thinning out dead stems in spring. This makes it useful for winter interest in a small pond, barrel, or tub garden, especially in shady areas. It is sometimes advertised (incorrectly) as a British native species, but is in fact native to northern Eurasia and America.
