Key Characteristics
- Appearance: It features narrow, grass-like leaves on slender, upright stems, forming a dense, bushy, and tight-clumping habit that resembles miniature bamboo. It is a soft-textured plant with arching green blades.
- Size: This cultivar is a smaller, more refined version of the standard Pogonatherum paniceum, typically reaching a height and width of 20-30 cm (approx. 8-12 inches). The parent species can grow up to 1.2 meters, but ‘Monica’ is a dwarf variety.
- Flowering: It produces inconspicuous, pale brown flower spikelets in the summer, though flowering is often rare and considered insignificant.
- Origin: The species is native to tropical areas of Asia, including China, India, and Vietnam.
Growing Conditions & Care
- Light: The plant thrives in full sun to part shade conditions. As an indoor plant, it prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate medium light.
- Water: The most crucial aspect of its care is constant moisture; it is not drought tolerant. It can even be grown at pond margins where it receives plenty of water.
- Soil: It prefers fertile, moisture-retentive, but well-drained soil.
- Temperature: It is not reliably frost-hardy and ideally should be kept in temperatures between 18°C – 26°C (65-75°F +). In colder areas, container-grown plants should be brought indoors.
- Uses: Its tidy, clumping habit makes it suitable for use as ground cover, in rock gardens, terrariums, or as a potted specimen.
