Key Characteristics
- Foliage: The main feature of the ‘Gerda’ cultivar is its attractive yellow-green variegation, with large patches of creamy yellow brightening the deep green leaves. Each leaf is palmately lobed, with 7 to 9 leaflets, resembling an umbrella.
- Growth Habit: It has an upright, bushy, and compact growth habit. Indoors, it typically reaches an eventual height of 100-150 cm (approx. 3-5 ft), but can be kept smaller with regular pruning.
- Toxicity: Like other Schefflera species, this plant is mildly toxic if ingested and should be kept out of reach of pets and children.
- Air Purifying: It is considered a good air-purifying plant.
Care Guide
- Light: The plant thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct, harsh sunlight can scorch the leaves, while too little light may cause the plant to become leggy or lose its vibrant variegation.
- Watering: Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm (about an inch) of soil feels dry to the touch. It is important to avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot; ensure any excess water drains away completely. Water less frequently during the winter months.
- Soil: Use a well-draining, rich potting mix, possibly with added perlite or sand for improved drainage.
- Temperature & Humidity: The ‘Gerda’ prefers consistent indoor temperatures, ideally between 15-24°C (60-75°F). It tolerates average indoor humidity but appreciates occasional misting or being placed on a tray of wet pebbles.
- Fertiliser: Feed every 4-6 weeks during the spring and summer growing season with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Stop feeding in the autumn and winter.
