Description
The plant, often referred to simply as Strobilanthes metallica, features broad, velvety leaves that display an iridescent blend of deep purple, blue, and green tones. The leaves have a shimmering surface of purple and silver with deep green veins. This tropical evergreen shrub can reach up to 1.2 metres (4 feet) in height, though it tends to be smaller (around 1 meter) in a container or as a houseplant. While it does produce small flowers, the foliage is its main attractive feature, and plants are often pinched back to encourage bushier growth rather than flowering.
Care
  • Light: Requires bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant purple colour; too much direct sun can bleach the leaves, while too little light can cause it to become leggy and lose colour.
  • Water: The soil should be kept consistently moist but not waterlogged. The plant is quite thirsty and will wilt if the soil dries out completely, though it typically recovers quickly after watering.
  • Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in warm, humid conditions (ideally above 60°F or 15°C) and is sensitive to frost. Indoors, you can increase humidity by misting regularly or placing the pot on a pebble tray with water.
  • Pruning: Pinch back the tips of the stems regularly to encourage branching and a fuller, bushier habit.
  • Propagation: Easily propagated through stem cuttings in spring or summer. Cuttings can be rooted in water or moist potting mix.
