Carex ‘Feather Falls’ (Japanese Sedge) is a highly versatile, fast-growing evergreen ornamental grass celebrated for its cascading, weeping habit. Featuring beautiful green ribbon-like leaves with crisp white or cream margins, it brings year-round movement, bright variegation, and texture to gardens and containers alike.

Key Characteristics & Specifications

  • Growth & Size: Exhibits outstanding hybrid vigor. It typically grows to 30–60 cm (12–24 inches) in height and can spread anywhere from 50 cm up to 1.2–1.5 metres (3–5 feet) over time, creating a dense, flowing mound.
  • Foliage & Flowers: The striking variegated foliage remains attractive through the winter. In late spring and early summer, it produces delicate, feathery, buff-to-brown flower spikes.
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy (USDA zones 5–10), making it exceptionally robust against frost and freezing winter temperatures.
  • Resilience: Highly deer-resistant, pest-resistant, and drought-tolerant once fully established.

Ideal Planting Conditions

  • Sunlight: Remarkably adaptable. While it prefers partial shade to full shade, it features excellent sun tolerance compared to older variegated sedges and will thrive in full sun if the soil stays adequately moist.
  • Soil: Prefers fertile, moist, but well-drained soil. It handles a variety of soil textures including loam, clay, and sand.
  • Garden Uses: Perfect for spilling over the edges of patio containers, softening border edges, serving as low maintenance ground cover, or brightening up dark, dry shade under tree canopies.
Care & Maintenance

  • Watering: Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a deep root system. Container plants should be watered more frequently during dry summer heat.
  • Feeding: Requires very little feeding; a single application of a balanced, slow-release organic fertiliser in late winter or early spring is sufficient.
  • Pruning: Virtually maintenance-free. Do not clip or shear it uniformly; simply comb through or selectively snip away any dead or browned blades in winter to make room for fresh spring growth.
