Phygelius ‘Red Emperor’ (part of the Croftway Series) is a compact, free-flowering semi-evergreen shrub or perennial commonly known as the Cape Fuchsia or Cape Figwort. Bred in the UK by Malcolm Spencer, this cultivar is highly valued for its striking, upright panicles of deep cherry-red tubular flowers with contrasting yellow throats that bloom continuously from May through October. It serves as an excellent choice for adding long-lasting, vibrant colour to sunny herbaceous borders, coastal cottage gardens, or patio containers.

  • Dimensions: Typically reaches a compact height and spread of 60 to 70 cm.

Growing & Care Instructions

  • Light Requirements: Thrives best in full sun to partial shade. Maximum sun exposure ensures the most prolific flower production.
  • Soil & Moisture: Prefers fertile, moist, but well-drained soil. It cannot tolerate waterlogged conditions, so ensuring excellent drainage is critical.
  • Pruning: Cut back the flower spikes once they fade to encourage continuous re-blooming throughout the season. In late spring, cut the old growth back to the base to stimulate fresh, vigorous new stems.
  • Winter Protection: While generally hardy in mild climates, it can behave as a herbaceous perennial in colder regions. Applying a thick layer of organic mulch over the root zone in autumn helps protect it from severe winter freezes.
