The mophead hydrangea ‘Crystal Palace’ makes a few demands on its location in order to develop its full beauty. It finds a good place in a sunny to semi-shady position. The plant reacts to deep shade with slower growth and hanging leaves. The soil of the garden should be moist and well-drained around the roots and not allow waterlogging. In the spring before the flowering period, the water requirement of the plant is reduced to normal. A daily supply of water until September is indicated only when the shrub begins to bloom in June. ‘Crystal Palace’ mophead hydrangea comes through the winter with a little help and a cover of ericaceous compost, mulch or peat. This cover, about 20 centimeters high, is placed on the root neck, just above the ground. The optimal time for a cut is in early spring of the following year, from the end of February to mid-March. Older shoots can then be cut off close to the ground to give the plant more flowering power again.
