Perovskia ‘Little Spire’

9.99

Perovskia ‘Little Spire’ (commonly known as Russian Sage) is a compact, drought-tolerant deciduous sub-shrub highly prized for its airy spikes of lavender-blue flowers and aromatic, silvery-grey foliage. It is a smaller, tidier cultivar than the traditional ‘Blue Spire’, making it ideal for smaller gardens, coastal sites, and patio containers where space is limited.

Key Characteristics
  • Growth Habit: Compact, upright, and bushy; typically reaches a height of 60–90 cm and a spread of 40–60 cm. Its sturdy stems rarely require staking.
  • Foliage: Deeply divided, grey-green leaves that release a pleasant, sage-like fragrance when crushed or brushed against.
  • Flowers: Clouds of tiny, vibrant violet-blue flowers that bloom extensively from mid-summer through autumn (typically July to October).
  • Winter Value: If left uncut in autumn, the striking silver-white stems provide excellent structural framework and colour during the winter months.

Ideal Growing Conditions
  • Sunlight: Requires full, unobstructed sun to thrive and maintain its upright structure. It will become floppy and sparse if planted in the shade.
  • Soil: Needs light, poor to moderately fertile, and sharply well-drained soil. It tolerates chalky, sandy, and poor clay soils, but will rot in wet winter conditions.
  • Drought & Wind Resistance: Once established, it is extremely drought-tolerant and handles exposed, windy, or coastal environments with ease.
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy across Ireland and the UK, capable of handling severe winter cold.
