Prunus laurocerasus ‘Mount Vernon’ (commonly known as the Mount Vernon Cherry Laurel or Dwarf English Laurel) is a low-growing, spreading broadleaf evergreen shrub. Unlike typical, tall cherry laurels used for high privacy screening, ‘Mount Vernon’ is a distinct dwarf cultivar valued as a well-mannered, ground-hugging cover plant.

Key Characteristics
  • Growth Habit: Low, compact, and prostrate. It forms a dense, flat cushion-like mound.
  • Dimensions: It slowly reaches a mature height of 20 to 60 cm (1 to 2 feet) and spreads 0.5 to 1.5 metres (4 to 5 feet) wide.
  • Foliage: Features highly ornamental, glossy, dark green oblong leaves that remain vibrant all through the winter.
  • Flowers & Fruit: Depending on regional conditions, it either rarely flowers or produces short, sweetly scented spikes of cream-white flowers from mid-to-late spring, occasionally followed by small black berries

Ideal Landscape Uses
  • Groundcover & Weed Suppression: Its dense, carpet-like layer makes it highly effective at choking out weeds and stabilizing soil on banks or slopes.
  • Problem Areas: Because it stands up well to root competition, it is a top choice for planting under large trees or established shrubs.
  • Low Borders: Excellent for front-of-border soft edging, small garden spaces, or modern urban plantings next to hardscaping.
  • Non-Invasive Nature: Unlike standard wild cherry laurels, it grows very slowly and does not suffer from aggressive "seeding-around" issues
