Skimmia japonica ‘Fragrant Cloud’ is a popular, compact evergreen shrub celebrated for its intensely aromatic spring blossoms and reliable year-round foliage. As a male cultivar, it does not produce berries, but it compensates with exceptionally dense, highly fragrant flower clusters that outperform female varieties in scent. It holds the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding garden performance and reliability.

Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: It forms a tidy, low-growing dome of leathery, glossy, dark green leaves.
  • Flowers: Reddish-pink or greenish-honey buds form in autumn, providing excellent winter structure. In March to May, these burst into clusters of star-shaped, creamy-white flowers.
  • Size: It grows slowly, taking 5 to 7 years to reach its ultimate height and spread of 1.0 to 1.2 metres.
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy (RHS H5 rating), meaning it easily survives harsh winters and frost

  • Shade Borders: This plant thrives in partial to full shade. Avoid full sun, which scorches the glossy leaves and turns them yellow.
  • Containers & Pots: Its compact nature makes it ideal for year-round patio pots, winter window boxes, or north-facing entryways.
