Key Characteristics & Growth Habit
  • Size and Spread: It typically reaches a mature height of 10 to 15 metres with a spread of 6 to 10 metres. It is naturally more compact, slower-growing, and more tightly branched than the standard wild species.
  • Foliage: The medium-to-dark green lobed leaves feature a attractive blue-grey bloom on their undersides during spring and summer. In autumn, the foliage transitions quickly into a dramatic, consistent scarlet display. 
  • Form: It develops a neat, symmetrical, and dense rounded crown, making it a beautiful standalone specimen tree.
  • Flowers: In early spring, it produces small clusters of greenish-yellow or red flowers on bare branches before the leaves emerge.

  • Light: Best planted in full sun to light partial shade. Full sun maximises the vividness of its autumn leaf display.
  • Soil: It prefers moist, fertile, and slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 5.5–7). While it is highly tolerant of wet or compacted soils, highly alkaline soils should be avoided as they can cause chlorosis (yellowing of the leaves).
  • Pruning: Minimal pruning is required. If branches need to be managed, do so in mid-summer; maples bleed sap heavily if cut during winter or early spring.
  • Hardiness: It is fully cold-hardy across the UK and Ireland and adapts well to urban environments
