Lophomyrtus × ralphii ‘Magic Dragon’ is a striking, compact evergreen shrub native to New Zealand, highly prized for its vibrant, multi-toned foliage. A sport of the ‘Red Dragon’ variety, it features crinkled, glossy leaves that display a rich mix of burgundy, rose-pink, cream, and deep green, with the colours intensifying significantly during colder winter months.

Appearance & Seasonal Interest

  • Foliage: The multi-coloured, variegated leaves remain on the plant year-round, turning deeper shades of burgundy or near-black framed by pinkish-white margins in the winter.
  • Flowers & Berries: In mid-to-late summer, it produces a profusion of small, cup-shaped, sweetly scented white flowers. These are followed by small, dark, egg-shaped black berries in the autumn.
  • Size: It typically grows to a mature height of 1.5 metres (5 feet) and a spread of 1.2 metres (4 feet) over 5 to 10 years, forming a neat, dense mound.

Ideal Planting Conditions

  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade. A brighter spot helps the foliage achieve its most intense and vibrant colouration.
  • Soil: Thrives in fertile, humus-rich, and well-drained soil. It tolerates most soil types (sandy or loamy) but will struggle in heavy, waterlogged winter clay.
  • Positioning: It is best suited for sheltered borders, patio containers, city courtyards, or as low hedging. It performs exceptionally well in mild or coastal microclimates.
Care & Maintenance
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but well-drained during its first growing season to establish the root system. Once fully established, it becomes relatively drought-tolerant, though it appreciates occasional watering during dry spells.
  • Hardiness: It is half-hardy to frost-hardy down to roughly -5°C (RHS Hardiness rating H3). It dislikes excessive winter wetness and harsh, drying winds.
  • Winter Protection: If you live in an area prone to hard freezes or exposed winter weather, shield the plant with garden fleece and apply a thick layer of mulch around the base to protect the roots. Alternatively, grow it in a pot so it can be moved to an unheated greenhouse or porch for the winter.
  • Pruning: It requires very minimal maintenance (Pruning Group 1). You can lightly trim
    • the branches in late winter or early spring to shape the shrub, remove any crossing stems, and encourage dense, colorful new growth.
